Why a goat? Why the Adriatic?
Because languages aren't spreadsheets — they're places and people. Croatian and Serbian live in stone streets warmed by the sun, in café conversations that last two hours, in markets where the seller remembers your name after one visit. We wanted an app that teaches the language together with the world it belongs to.
So we built one: a fairy-tale Adriatic, rendered like an animated film, with a small brave goat named Lumo as your companion. He's a beginner too. He gets nervous ordering coffee. He celebrates every small victory with you. That's not a mascot gimmick — it's the design: learning is easier next to someone who's learning with you.
What we believe
- Phrases beat words. Nobody speaks in vocabulary lists. From minute one, you learn whole phrases that do real work in real situations.
- Speaking is not optional. An app that never hears your voice isn't teaching you to speak. Lumo listens, and the story only moves when you talk.
- Fair play is sacred. Every timer in the game is derived from real native-speaker audio. If a challenge ever feels impossible, that's a bug — and we treat it like one. The game must never demand you speak faster than a native does.
- Show, don't lecture. Rules appear as pictures, first successes are guided by the hand, and critical information is always big, clear, and honest.
- Both standards, both scripts. Croatian and Serbian are taught side by side, Latin and Cyrillic together — because that's how the region actually lives.
How Lumo is made
Lumo is crafted by a tiny independent team with an unreasonable amount of care. Every chapter is playtested with real learners, and the design principles that guide the game were earned the hard way — from watching real players get confused, frustrated, or delighted. When a playtest reveals a rough edge, it becomes a rule that every future chapter must follow.
The game's art, story, and audio are built as one piece: native-speaker recordings, hand-tuned scene design, and a single continuous narrative across all 30 chapters — from your first “Molim jednu kafu” to conversations with real depth and humor.
